Born in Brussels in 1985, Julien Carlier approached dance in a self-taught manner through the practice of Breakdance. He trained in physiotherapy and obtained a Master's degree from the Free University of Brussels before dedicating himself entirely to dance. His first stage experiences came from several interdisciplinary artistic exchanges and collective creations.
His journey as a choreographer began in 2012 after he followed the first "Hip-Hop Springboard" training.
More recently, he participated in the choreographic training "Prototype IV" (2017-2018) at the Royaumont Abbey in Paris.
He created his first piece in collaboration with the dancer Yassin Mrabtifi, Insane Solidarity, in 2012. He then created two personal projects: MON/DE (2015) and Déjà-Vu (2016). He founded the ABIS Company in 2017 to support his creative process.
In 2019, he presented the piece Golem which was selected to participate in several prestigious promotional showcases: Objective Dance 9 (Wallonia-Brussels Federation), the Spring Forward (festival organized by the European platform Aerowaves) and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
His latest creation Dress Code (2020), features breakdancers, and questions the practice of this discipline.
Julien Carlier was selected by Aerowaves to be among the 20 choreographers to follow in 2020: the Twenty20.
His work as a choreographer combines the virtuosity of the Hip-Hop vocabulary with a search for sensitivity and listening to the other. He likes to work from individualities and moments of encounters to build his projects.
Julien Carlier is a resident choreographer at Charleroi dance during the 2020-2021, 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 seasons.
Supported by the Wallonia-Brussels Federation and the Grand studio, he also belongs to the cross-border network Grand Luxe.
