Pietro Marullo

Pietro Marullo defines himself as a materiographer, an artist who writes the drama of space through matter. Born in Naples in 1985, he trained in Italy in movement and music, philosophy and anthropology. In Belgium, he studied directing at INSAS in Brussels, and he took sculpture classes at the Academy of Fine Arts. He is now an associate artist at the Festival Oriente Occidente in Italy and the Italo-Asian project Crossing the Sea. While expanding his international network, he cultivates his roots in FWB by becoming an associate artist at the Halles de Schaerbeek in Brussels in 2020 where a new project is about to begin. 

Since 2015, he has been conducting research on Euro-African relations, as well as on contemporary slavery and migration phenomena (ARANCE - avoid shooting blacks, in 2015) and their isolation in "refugee camps" (ARIANE - euphonie, in 2019). He approaches these subjects with the gaze of an anthropologist, elaborating the founding myths of Europe, the Neolithic history of the human species, the archetypes of the border and the labyrinth. From this perspective, his way of mixing visual art with sculptural and kinetic art, gives him the opportunity to form scenic symbols, which agglutinate several dimensions of reality. Not only historical, but also philosophical, aesthetic and psychic.

Following his interest in the study of complex dynamic systems, he creates a trilogy on the relationship between culture and violence as emerging factors of being together. WRECK - List of extinct species (2017) and HIVE - our hydrological need of cosmic line (2019) are the first two parts that question the dynamics of a community, respectively, in the face of an external danger or internal conflicts. WRECK is selected by the AEROWAVES network which guarantees it a wide distribution in Europe and around the world, under the label "Aerowaves Twenty18 Artist". This project is also a finalist at the ARTE LAGUNA PRIZE 2018 and the international competition DANSE ELARGIE 2018 organized by the Théâtre de la Ville de Paris and the Hermès Foundation. This show has been touring since 2017 in Europe, America and Asia.

Due to their hybrid nature, these projects have already been presented in several different frameworks of cultural events, such as: dance festival, puppet festival and objects, experimental music festival, museums and galleries.
